As the tenure of Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa, comes to an end on March 6, 2020, indication has emerged that the most senior judge in the Appeal Court, Justice Monica Dongban Mensem, may be edged out to pave way for the appointment of Justice Mohammed Garba as the next president of the Appeal Court.

Justice Bulkachuwa, will clock 70 on March 6, 2020, and is expected to go on retirement this month while Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, the Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Jos division, is expected to take over from her.

By tradition, the National Judicial Council (NJC) appoints heads of courts based on seniority and Justice Dongban-Mensem is the next most senior judge to Bulkachuwa.

However, the cabal in the presidency is said not to be comfortable with Justice Dongban- Mensem, a Christian from Plateau State.

Instead of Justice Dongban- Mensem, Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba, who heads the Appeal Court in Lagos is being favoured.

Justice Lawal Garba presided over the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal that dismissed the petition filed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar against the election of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Source in the known told WazobiaReporters that Justice Dongban-Mensem, might either gets what they termed “Onnoghen treatment” or be moved to the Supreme Court to pave way for the appointment of Justice Garba to succeed Bulkachuwa as the Appeal Court President.

“They don’t want to use Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem because she is a Christian, from Plateau State and she is not easy to control.

“They obviously want another ‘Tanko’ to head the Court of Appeal,” the source said.
