BREAKING: Ekiti University Workers Protest Against Fayemi Over New 70 Percent Tax Regime

Activities at the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti (EKSU) are now paralysed as none academic staff of the university are currently protesting against imposition of 70 percent tax on their salary by the Dr Kayode Fayemi led government.

The new tax regime of 70 percent was introduced this month and it is to be implemented retroactively from January 2018.

This morning, workers in their large number barricaded the entrance to the administrative block to press home their demands.

The angry workers were chanting solidarity songs and raining curses on management of the university and the State government for subjecting them to hardship.

Internal Memo from the Office of the Bursar with reference number BUR/CB/VOL. 1/002/080, dated September 17, 2019 and signed by A. I. Titiloye-Owolabi, stated that; “Please, the Council at its 131st meeting held on Monday, 11th and Tuesday, 12th February, 2019 directed that 70% tax rate be applied on chargeable income with effect from 1st January, 2018 as contained in the White Paper (2019).

“The University Management in a meeting held on Monday, September 16, 2019 finally advised the Bursar to inform the university community.

“This serves to inform the University Community that the implementation will commence with payment of September, 2019 salaries.

“Acceptable management will be worked out to recover the Tax arrears.

“We hope for your cooperation with the implementation of the policy.”
