The development came two days after the government began paying the Consolidated Academic Tertiary Institutions Allowance (CATA) to academic staff in federal tertiary institutions.

The Federal Government said the two payments were aimed at addressing staff welfare concerns, maintaining industrial harmony and preventing disruptions to academic activities across the country.

Alausa said the release of the CONTA arrears reflected the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of non-academic workers and recognising their role in keeping tertiary institutions operating effectively.

He said the welfare and motivation of both academic and non-academic personnel were important to maintaining stable institutions and developing the skilled workforce required for national growth.

The minister explained that the payment formed part of broader efforts to address legitimate welfare concerns and reduce the possibility of disputes that could disrupt the academic calendar.

He said the administration would continue strengthening institutions responsible for developing Nigeria’s human capital, noting that a stable tertiary education system was necessary for the country’s socio-economic development.

Alausa also said the Federal Ministry of Education would continue discussions with relevant unions, heads of institutions and other stakeholders to resolve outstanding issues affecting workers and institutions.

He appealed to academic and non-academic staff, unions and institutional authorities to continue cooperating with the government as reforms in the tertiary education sector are implemented.

The minister said the ministry would maintain its focus on staff welfare, institutional stability, human capital development and improved learning outcomes.

He added that the Federal Government remained committed to meeting its obligations to tertiary education workers and addressing outstanding welfare matters under the human capital development objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
