Former Labour Party (LP) governorship aspirant Kenneth Imasuangbon, African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for Edo Central Senatorial District Herberta Okonofua and other party stakeholders reportedly escaped an attack when suspected political thugs opened fire on their convoy in Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State.
An ADC supporter identified as Jerry Oliha was injured during the incident and was taken to Irrua Specialist Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
The attack reportedly occurred on Tuesday while the ADC members were on their way to political engagements at the palace of a traditional ruler in the local government area.
Edo State ADC Publicity Secretary, Chris Ojeikere, said the incident was part of what the party described as a wider pattern of attacks targeting opposition members and party facilities in the state.
Ojeikere alleged that the convoy came under fire three times during the day, with the first two incidents reportedly occurring at Ward 4 and Ward 5 before the alleged attack near the monarch’s palace.
He further alleged that the chairman of Igueben Local Government Area led a group of armed men who attacked the entourage of Imasuangbon and Okonofua.
The ADC official said the Divisional Police Officer in Igueben had been informed about the incident and was involved in efforts to address the situation.
The alleged sponsor of the attack, however, denied involvement and said he was not in Igueben when the incident occurred.
He said he only learnt about the incident from reporters and was not in a position to comment on what he had not witnessed.
The council chairman said he would investigate the allegations, adding that the incident was unfamiliar to him and that the people of Igueben were peaceful.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting and the identity of those responsible remained subject to investigation.
