The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council (ADC-PCC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain neutrality in preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The council made the demand on Wednesday while reacting to INEC’s World Press Conference held on Tuesday, saying the credibility of the election would depend on the commission providing a level playing field for all political parties.
In a statement issued by its Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, the ADC-PCC said its presidential candidate remained prepared for the 2027 election, provided INEC ensured a free, fair and credible process.
The council said the number of voters registered by the commission should not be the only measure of electoral preparedness, arguing that registered voters must also be able to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) before election day.
It alleged that bureaucratic delays and other administrative challenges were affecting PVC collection at some centres, particularly in areas regarded as opposition strongholds.
The ADC-PCC warned that such difficulties could prevent eligible Nigerians from participating in the election if they were unable to obtain their PVCs on time.
The council said it would continue monitoring INEC’s preparations and insist on compliance with the Constitution and Electoral Act throughout the electoral process.
It also urged INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, to decentralise PVC collection to ward level and extend the hours available for voters to collect their cards.
The campaign council further called for the use of technology to notify voters when their PVCs were ready for collection, saying this could reduce delays and make the process more accessible.
The ADC-PCC said INEC’s responsibility was to conduct the election independently and ensure that eligible Nigerians were not prevented from exercising their voting rights through administrative challenges.
It maintained that the commission should remain impartial as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue.
