The Cross River State House of Assembly has commenced consideration of a proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish State Police Services in all 36 states of Nigeria.

The bill was transmitted to the state legislature by the National Assembly as part of the ongoing constitutional review process.

The proposed legislation is titled a bill to amend the 1999 Constitution to provide for the establishment of State Police Services and related matters across the 36 states of the federation.
If adopted, the amendment would create a constitutional framework for state police services while retaining the Nigeria Police Force as the Federal Police Service.
The National Assembly also forwarded the votes and proceedings of both chambers, alongside other documents relating to the proposed constitutional amendment.

During plenary, members of the Cross River Assembly approved a motion for the correspondence and accompanying documents to be formally received and laid before the House.
The lawmakers subsequently adopted the proposed amendment as a working document for further consideration.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, said the bill would go through the required legislative procedures, including detailed consideration and debate, before the House takes a position on it.
The House thereafter subjected the bill to First Reading, formally commencing its consideration by the state legislature.
The proposed amendment forms part of the wider constitutional review being undertaken by the National Assembly, which includes consideration of the creation of State Police Services across Nigeria.
