The Federal Ministry of Education has released the final list of ranked and approved textbooks to be used in Nigerian schools for the 2026–2028 academic period.

The ministry announced this in a statement issued on Monday by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, following the completion of the first phase of the national textbook ranking exercise.

The first phase covers textbooks for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 and Senior Secondary School 1.
Each approved textbook has been assigned a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code, alongside information such as the title, author or authors, publisher and year of publication. The system is intended to make it easier for education authorities and other stakeholders to identify, monitor and account for approved instructional materials.
The exercise was carried out under the supervision of the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, with the final list approved by Alausa.
The ministry said the new tracking system was introduced to improve the monitoring and control of approved textbooks and provide greater transparency in their selection, procurement and use.
It explained that the process of generating and assigning individual tracking codes to the ranked textbooks contributed to the time required to complete and validate the final lists.

The textbook ranking exercise will be conducted in phases. Following the completion of the first phase, the ministry said preparations would begin for the second phase, which will cover Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2 and SS 2 textbooks.
The same identification and tracking system will be applied to textbooks approved under the subsequent phase.
The ministry urged publishers, schools, education authorities, procurement agencies and other stakeholders to consult the approved list when selecting or purchasing textbooks for the affected classes.
It also directed stakeholders to comply with the approved titles when providing and using textbooks for the specified levels.
According to the ministry, the exercise forms part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the quality of instructional materials available to teachers and learners while strengthening transparency and accountability in textbook provision across schools.
The complete list of approved textbooks for 2026–2028, including the Ranking/QR Tracking Code assigned to each title, has been made available by the Federal Ministry of Education through its designated online platform.
