A fire outbreak has damaged the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Western Marine Command office in Apapa, Lagos, destroying property estimated to be worth millions of naira.

The incident occurred on Monday at about 10:23 a.m., with preliminary reports indicating that the fire started in the conference room following an electrical surge before spreading to other parts of the building.

Customs officers at the command reportedly attempted to control the fire after it was discovered while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.
Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene at about 10:45 a.m. and joined efforts to put out the fire.
The incident occurred as Deputy Comptroller of Customs Timothy Jonah resumed at the command to take over its affairs from his predecessor.

Jonah described the outbreak as an unfortunate development, saying his assumption of duty coincided with the incident.
He said the command would establish a committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire and determine its exact cause.
The deputy comptroller also praised the officers who responded to the emergency and worked with the fire service to contain the situation.
He said the command would review its safety measures and strengthen existing protocols to reduce the possibility of a similar incident occurring in the future.
The extent of the damage and the full value of property affected by the fire were yet to be officially determined.
