President Bola Tinubu has said Nigerians should begin to experience lower transportation costs from October 2026 under the Federal Government’s National Affordable Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Transit Programme.

The development was disclosed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement on Saturday.

According to the statement, Tinubu had on August 27 met with the governors of the 36 states, where they agreed to work towards reducing the cost of transportation from October 1.
The President said the objective was to ensure that more Nigerians experienced measurable reductions in transport costs as the CNG transit programme expands.

Following the meeting, an implementation committee was established under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to coordinate the programme. The committee is chaired by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
The statement said work was already ongoing among the committee, PI-CNG and electric vehicle stakeholders, state governments and other relevant bodies.
The groups are working to identify priority transport corridors, determine the appropriate interventions and put the required arrangements in place ahead of the October target.
The Federal Government said the need to reduce transportation costs had become more urgent because of the current global energy crisis.
The programme is expected to support the use of compressed natural gas and electric vehicles in public transportation as part of efforts to reduce the cost of mobility for Nigerians.
