The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2027 election, Omoyele Sowore, has promised to transform Nigeria into a major global sports hub if elected president.

Sowore made the pledge on Saturday in Enugu while taking part in the 2026 Enugu City International Marathon.

He said his administration would prioritise sports development and ensure that Nigeria qualifies for every FIFA World Cup throughout his proposed eight-year tenure.
The AAC candidate also promised to develop other sporting disciplines and create better conditions for Nigerian athletes to compete successfully at international competitions.
Sowore participated in the 10-kilometre race for the second time, explaining that he returned because he was impressed by the organisation of the previous edition.
He described road races as useful for promoting healthy living, bringing communities together and engaging young people.
The politician called on state governments across the country to organise similar sporting events, saying such activities could contribute to both social and economic development.
Sowore, however, pointed out that the Enugu event was technically a 10-kilometre road race rather than a full marathon. He explained that a standard marathon covers 42 kilometres, while a half marathon covers 21 kilometres.
According to him, sports can serve as a tool for improving public health, strengthening communities and promoting Nigerian culture.
He also said the sector could provide opportunities for young Nigerians to become international ambassadors while contributing to the country’s economy.

Sowore described sports as part of the creative and entertainment economy and argued that Nigeria could generate substantial revenue from the sector if it was properly developed.
He cited Brazil and Kenya as examples of countries that have built strong international reputations and economic opportunities around sports, particularly football and long-distance running.
The AAC candidate questioned why Nigeria, with its large population and abundance of athletic talent, has struggled to compete with Kenya in long-distance events.
He also pointed to the country’s potential in swimming, saying Nigeria has the human resources and natural advantages needed to produce athletes capable of winning international medals.
Sowore promised to invest in sporting facilities and establish an environment where athletes can train and compete at the highest level.
He said the government would also focus on competent management of sports institutions and better support for athletes.
The presidential candidate criticised the administration of football in Nigeria, arguing that the country has enough talent to perform better on the international stage.
He said poor management and inadequate investment had prevented Nigeria from fully taking advantage of its sporting potential.
Sowore described Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the World Cup as unacceptable and promised to make qualification a priority if elected.
He said his government would ensure that competent people are appointed to manage sports and that athletes receive the support required to succeed.
According to him, Nigeria should not miss a World Cup during his proposed eight-year presidency.
