Tinubu Commissions Bwari Water Project, Promises Clean Water For All FCT Satellite Towns

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned the Bwari Township Water Supply Network Project, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to extending access to clean and safe water to all satellite towns in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The President, represented by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, performed the inauguration on Tuesday in Bwari.

He described access to potable water as a basic right and said his administration would continue to deliver infrastructure that improves the lives of residents across every part of the FCT under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Tinubu said the Renewed Hope Agenda represents a firm commitment to delivering practical governance and improving the welfare of Nigerians.

He noted that past governments concentrated development within Abuja’s city centre while many satellite communities received little attention.

According to him, his administration has decided to reverse that trend by ensuring development reaches every community, regardless of location.

The President said the newly completed 198-kilometre water pipeline network, constructed by China Geo-engineering Construction (CGC) Limited, will supply treated water from the Lower Usuma Dam to Bwari, Ushafa and neighbouring communities.

He recalled that after receiving the proposal from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, he immediately approved the project to end years of dependence on untreated water sources such as streams and boreholes.

Tinubu disclosed that he instructed the minister to mobilise qualified professionals and complete the project, which has now been delivered as a modern water infrastructure serving thousands of residents.

He said the project would improve public health by reducing water-related diseases, lower dependence on private boreholes and open up new economic opportunities for the affected communities.

According to the President, the construction of the project also created more than 1,600 direct and indirect jobs.

Tinubu assured residents that the ongoing expansion of water infrastructure would continue to other satellite towns across the FCT.

He listed the rehabilitation of the Lower Usuma Dam Phase II, the recently completed Karu water network and the Bwari project as part of the administration’s water development programme.

The President also pledged that Kuje, Kwali, Gwagwalada and Abaji would benefit from the same water expansion before the end of his administration.

Tinubu commended the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, for driving infrastructure development across the territory.

He praised the minister for improving internally generated revenue and supervising the execution of several projects covering roads, housing and water supply.

The President also appealed to residents of Bwari to protect the new facility against vandalism, noting that it was built with public resources for the benefit of the people.

Earlier, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike, said the project fulfilled the President’s directive to extend modern water infrastructure beyond the city centre to underserved satellite communities.

He explained that the Bwari project is the third major water intervention completed under the Tinubu administration, following the rehabilitation of Abuja’s city water system and the commissioning of the Karu satellite town water project.

According to Wike, the administration has shown that development is not limited to road construction but also covers essential services such as water supply.

The minister disclosed that the government has now inaugurated 50 major projects since President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.

He added that another 10 projects are expected to be commissioned before election campaigns begin next year.

Wike attributed the pace of development in the FCT to the strong support provided by President Tinubu.

He said the President had given the FCT administration everything required to improve infrastructure across the territory, adding that the government would continue to deliver on its mandate.

In her vote of thanks, the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, described the Bwari Water Supply Network as another major achievement under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

She said the project would improve access to clean drinking water, promote better public health and strengthen public confidence in government.

Mahmoud also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to expanding infrastructure projects that directly improve the lives of residents across the FCT.

Also speaking, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda, disclosed that the project was substantially completed ahead of its original completion date in December.

He said the water project not only created employment opportunities during construction but would also improve the health and quality of life of residents by providing reliable access to safe drinking water.
