The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has said the Federal Government has not approved Adire as a replacement for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) khaki uniform.

His clarification came after reports claimed he announced during a Channels Television interview that Adire would replace the current NYSC outfit.

In a statement shared on his social media page after the interview, the minister explained that his comments were misunderstood. He said he only mentioned Adire and Ankara as examples of fabrics being looked at in ongoing talks about possible changes to the NYSC uniform.
He added that no fabric or design has been selected or approved yet. According to him, the discussions are still ongoing and involve different ideas that are being reviewed carefully.

Olawande said the government is looking at options that fit well with appearance, strength, usefulness, cost, and support for local production. He explained that the aim is also to promote national identity and pride through whatever final choice is made.
During the TV interview, he had spoken about Adire being produced in Nigeria and suggested that local textile production should be supported. This led to reports that the uniform had already been changed.
The minister later urged Nigerians not to focus only on the uniform issue, saying the wider NYSC reforms are more important. He said the reforms are meant to improve job opportunities for young people, support skills and business development, and strengthen unity across the country.
He also said the goal is to make the NYSC more useful for graduates as they move into working life, adding that the process of reform is still ongoing and no final decision has been made on uniforms.
