Okonkwo made the announcement through a post on his official X account on Thursday, where he confirmed that he had accepted the role.

He said the appointment came from Atiku and described it as a duty that carries major responsibility as the party prepares for the 2027 general election.

He stated that the decision followed discussions within the camp of the African Democratic Congress and its leadership, where political concerns and arrangements tied to the South-East were reviewed in line with the Electoral Act 2026 and current political conditions in the country.

Okonkwo also said he appreciated those who have worked within the party structure, including former party leaders and aides close to Atiku, for their roles in building support ahead of the election period.

He added that he remains thankful for the backing of his family, supporters, and friends as he takes on the new assignment.

The actor-turned-politician also noted that he had earlier raised concerns about some decisions within the party, especially regarding the choice of a running mate for the 2027 presidential race.

He had argued that the South-East has remained without the presidency or vice presidency since 1999, and had called for broader inclusion in national political arrangements.
