The government said the intense rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems and caused flash floods in areas including Victoria Island, Lekki, Ikeja, Gbagada and Mushin.

Officials explained that Lagos’ coastal location also slows the movement of stormwater into the sea during high tides.

Emergency response teams have been deployed while monitoring of drainage channels and flood-prone communities has been strengthened.

The state also promised to continue improving drainage infrastructure to reduce the impact of future rainfall.

Residents were urged to stop dumping refuse into drains, avoid building on waterways and obey weather warnings.

The government also advised motorists to stay away from flooded roads as efforts continue to manage the flooding across the state.
