Sowore Gets N200m Bail From Court

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted Omoyele Sowore fresh bail in the sum of N200 million after earlier revoking his bail over his failure to appear in court.

Justice Mohammed Umar delivered the ruling on Monday and fixed July 6 for the commencement of trial.

The court directed Sowore to provide two sureties with the same bail amount. One must be a traditional ruler from his community, while the other must own property in Abuja.

He was also ordered to deposit his travel documents with the court’s deputy registrar.
In reaching the decision, the judge noted that Sowore voluntarily appeared before the court instead of waiting to be arrested.
The court considered this conduct before exercising its discretion to grant him another opportunity to remain on bail.
His lawyer informed the court that Sowore’s passport is currently with the United States Embassy in Lagos and requested permission for him to retrieve it before submitting it to the court.
The defence also asked that he be released to enable him meet the bail conditions before the next hearing.
