A Yoruba socio-cultural group has condemned the Department of State Services over its handling of activist Omoyele Sowore during a court session in Abuja.

The group accused the agency of attempting to detain him inside the courtroom in what it described as a forceful and public show of power. It also claimed the action was aimed at stopping his political activities.

The organisation said the DSS acted beyond its legal limits and treated Sowore in a manner it believes was unjustified since no offence had been proven against him.

It further alleged that the operatives tried to embarrass him in front of others during the court proceedings, raising concerns about respect for judicial spaces.
In its reaction, the group criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, claiming that security agencies are being used to target critics while failing to apprehend violent criminals across the country.
It pointed to ongoing insecurity issues and argued that attention is being misdirected away from armed groups.
The Yoruba Union also called for accountability within the DSS and urged its leadership to address the conduct of officers involved.
It maintained that Nigeria is facing growing concerns over rights and governance, warning that continued clashes between security agencies and activists could deepen public tension.
