Kwara Monarchs Faces Backlash Over Political Visit Amid Insecurity

Kwara State has been thrown into debate after traditional rulers from Kwara North travelled to Abuja to seek support for the governorship ambition of Kwara Assembly Speaker Yakubu Danladi Salihu.

The visit came at a time when several communities in the region continue to suffer repeated attacks, killings and abductions by armed groups.

The meeting with President Bola Tinubu and APC leaders has drawn criticism from residents who feel the monarchs should have focused on pressing for stronger security action.

Many communities in Kaiama, Baruten, Patigi and Edu remain under threat, with families still dealing with past attacks and missing relatives.

Recent violence in the region includes deadly raids in Yashikira and Woro communities, where homes were burnt, residents killed and several people abducted.

Victims have included women, children and members of royal families, while some villages have been deserted due to fear of further attacks.

Some locals say the Abuja trip shows a shift in focus away from urgent security needs.

They argue that while insecurity continues across Kwara North and parts of Kwara South, attention is now on political succession instead of rescue efforts and protection for affected communities.
