Abdulsalami Breaks Silence On Abacha’s $500m Claim

Former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar has dismissed claims that he received $500 million after the death of General Sani Abacha in 1998.

In his autobiography, he described the allegation as false and insisted that no money was handed to him following the former ruler’s death.

Abdulsalami said the rumour surfaced after he left office and was aimed at damaging his reputation.
He argued that the claim lacked credibility and questioned how such a huge amount could have been secretly transferred without evidence or public knowledge.

The former military leader also defended his administration against accusations of mismanaging Nigeria’s foreign reserves.
He said his government inherited financial obligations and falling oil revenues, while also funding elections, public projects and international commitments during its short time in office.
He further disclosed that his administration was working towards the release of MKO Abiola before the businessman’s death in July 1998.
According to him, consultations were ongoing with political stakeholders, but no final date had been fixed for Abiola’s release.
He also maintained that medical findings showed Abiola died of natural causes and not poisoning.
