Aiyedatiwa Pushes For State Policing

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has declared that the state is fully prepared for the introduction of state police, as former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole and elder statesman Olu Falae called for major changes to Nigeria’s security system.

The leaders spoke during a June 12 anniversary lecture held in Akure to reflect on democracy and national development.

Aiyedatiwa said insecurity remains one of the biggest threats to democratic governance and warned that fear and violence weaken public trust in government.

He stated that Ondo has already built the structures needed for state policing, adding that the state only requires approval for the equipment and tools needed to improve security operations.

Oshiomhole used the event to honour the legacy of the late MKO Abiola and praised the unity shown by Nigerians during the June 12, 1993 election.

He also backed ongoing economic reforms and stressed the importance of accountability in public institutions, while urging the return of History as a key subject in schools.

Falae recalled the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists after the annulment of the June 12 election, noting that many endured detention, exile and hardship.

He maintained that democracy remains the best path for national progress and urged Nigerians to work together in tackling insecurity, voter apathy and distrust in public institutions.
