Obi Questions Gains From Tinubu UK Trip

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised recent foreign trips by Nigerian leaders, saying state visits should deliver direct economic benefits to citizens.

In a statement on Saturday, Obi argued that diplomacy must go beyond ceremonies and public appearances. He said international engagements should lead to investments, jobs and industrial growth.

Obi pointed to a recent visit by former US President Donald Trump to China as an example of economic focused diplomacy.

According to him, the trip reportedly involved major business executives and produced large trade agreements.

He said successful foreign engagements should attract factories, technology transfer and business partnerships that improve local economies.

The former Anambra governor questioned the outcome of President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to the United Kingdom.

He asked what concrete economic gains Nigeria secured from the trip, including new factories, industrial agreements and employment opportunities for young Nigerians.

Obi also criticised the size of the Nigerian delegation that travelled for the visit.

He argued that Nigeria’s economic hardship, rising inflation and unemployment make it necessary for every government trip abroad to produce visible results.

Obi maintained that public resources spent on foreign engagements should translate into investments and economic opportunities for citizens.

He added that the country needs leadership focused on productivity rather than ceremony.
