Attorney General Backs Move To Deregister ADC, Accord And Others

The Attorney General of the Federation has asked the Federal High Court Abuja to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission to deregister five political parties, including the African Democratic Congress and Accord Party.

In court documents, the Attorney General argued that parties that fail to meet constitutional requirements should not remain registered.

The suit claims such parties did not achieve the minimum results in past elections but are still recognised by INEC.
The plaintiffs are asking the court to order INEC to remove the affected parties and stop them from taking part in future elections or political activities.
They insist the law makes it compulsory for the commission to act once parties fall below set thresholds.
The case is expected to shape Nigeria’s political space ahead of 2027, as a ruling in favour of the request could reduce the number of parties and affect ongoing coalition talks.
