The African Democratic Congress has accused the Edo State Government of plotting an attempt on Peter Obi’s life after violence disrupted a party event in Benin City on Tuesday.

The allegation was made by Kenneth Okonkwo, a member of the party’s National Working Committee, during a television interview on Wednesday.

Okonkwo said he spoke with former Edo governor and ADC state chairman, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, who briefed him on what happened.

He claimed armed men trailed a convoy linked to the event, forced their way towards Oyegun’s residence and damaged property.

He described the incident as a direct attack on opposition figures and blamed government actors or their allies.

He also referred to earlier remarks he attributed to Governor Monday Okpebholo about Obi’s visit, saying the warning raised concerns about the safety of opposition leaders.

Okonkwo further argued that the development reflects rising political tension ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, the Edo State Police Command confirmed there was unrest at the ADC secretariat on Ogbelaka Street after the event had ended.

Police said suspected hoodlums caused panic, vandalised items and triggered a stampede.

Officers responded to a distress call, while the attackers fled. No deaths were recorded, though one woman was injured.
