Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has renewed his criticism of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike over the public holiday and movement restriction declared during the recent area council elections in Abuja.

He said the minister had no legal authority to take such steps.

Falana maintained that only the President, the Minister of Interior or state governors can lawfully declare public holidays.

He argued that the FCT minister acted outside his powers and asked him to point to any law that supports his decision.

Wike had earlier defended his action, saying he acted with the President’s approval after receiving security reports about plans to disrupt the polls.

He also urged Falana to verify facts before making public statements.

In a statement on Monday, Falana dismissed the defence, insisting that even the President cannot interfere with the conduct of elections.

He questioned whether Wike complied with the same movement restriction he announced and whether he was eligible to vote in the FCT during the exercise.
