El Rufai Questions US Bill Targeting Kwankwaso

Former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration may be linked to a move by US Congressman Riley Moore to blacklist former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, over alleged religious freedom violations.

He suggested the action could be tied to Kwankwaso’s refusal to join the ruling All Progressives Congress and rumours of a possible move to the African Democratic Congress.

The bill, introduced by Moore and co-sponsored by Chris Smith, seeks visa bans and asset freezes against individuals and groups accused of involvement in religious freedom abuses in Nigeria.

The proposed law names Kwankwaso alongside Fulani-ethnic nomad militias and groups such as the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore.
It also calls for humanitarian support to be delivered through faith-based and non-governmental organisations in Nigeria’s Middle Belt states.
El-Rufai questioned why Kwankwaso was singled out when other northern governors who implemented Sharia were not mentioned.
He urged Nigerians not to be drawn into what he described as US domestic political manoeuvring, while also expressing concern over Nigeria’s worsening security situation and calling for urgent reforms to ensure citizens feel safe.
