In Lagos on Saturday, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), warned that the Senior Advocate of Nigeria rank is not a personal right but a privilege that can be taken away.

He said the title could be withdrawn if a holder abuses it or brings it into disrepute.
Speaking at a dinner organised by the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria to mark 50 years of the SAN rank, Fagbemi said some holders wrongly believe the honour cannot be touched once awarded.
He dismissed that view, saying, “There are those among us who appear to regard the rank as a licence for misconduct and indiscipline, under the mistaken belief that once conferred, it is inalienable.
The minister explained that the rank comes with strict ethical duties and higher standards of behaviour.
Fagbemi also called on SANs to enforce discipline within their own body, saying, “Enforcing discipline must start in-house, from our Body.
He urged junior lawyers to show respect while reminding senior advocates that respect must be earned through conduct.
