A fresh dispute has broken out in the Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress following widespread claims that Alhaji Muktar Shehu Idris has been endorsed as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

Muktar Shehu Idris was the APC candidate in the 2019 governorship poll, where he polled the highest votes against Mohammed Bello Matawalle of the PDP.

The victory was later overturned by the Supreme Court, which ruled that the APC failed to conduct valid primaries, leading to Matawalle being declared winner as the runner-up.
The renewed talk of Idris’s endorsement has raised fears of a repeat of that setback, with party stakeholders warning that holding meetings instead of proper primaries could again cost the APC the state.
While some members back Idris, others insist the ticket should go to Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle or federal lawmaker Abdulmalik Zubairu.
The party leadership, however, has dismissed the reports as false, saying no governorship candidate has been chosen and urging members to remain calm until official primaries are held.
