Lagos Eviction Protest Turns Violent

A peaceful demonstration against demolitions in Lagos escalated on Wednesday as police fired tear gas at protesters and onlookers, leaving several injured and prompting multiple arrests.

Residents from Makoko, Oworonshoki, Sogunro, Otumara, Ayetoro, Owode Onirin, Ajegunle, and Bariga marched to the Lagos State House of Assembly in Alausa to demand a stop to forced evictions and destruction of homes.

They carried symbolic coffins to dramatise their opposition to the demolitions.
The protest, which began at Ikeja Underbridge, descended into chaos when officers deployed tear gas, causing panic among demonstrators, traders, and commuters.

Witnesses reported people collapsing from inhalation of the gas, and movement in the area was heavily disrupted. Several protesters, including elderly residents, were detained, and some were injured.

Journalists covering the event were also affected, with one reporter from the Foundation for Investigative Journalism noting attempts by police to arrest her despite showing identification.

Authorities prevented the protesters from meeting with lawmakers or the governor, further escalating tensions.

Among the injured was a woman from Oworonshoki, Kafayat Muftaudeen, who required hospital treatment and is being prepared for further medical attention. Police maintained a heavy presence at the Assembly complex even after the crowd dispersed.
