He said the tenure of the affected chairmen ended on October 22, 2025, and cannot be stretched under the Constitution.

What the governor said was made public through a statement shared on his official X handle, where he warned that local government autonomy does not permit individuals with expired mandates to occupy council offices or manage public funds.

“Local government autonomy does not mean unelected individuals with expired tenure can occupy council secretariats or handle public funds meant for workers. Filing a court case does not equal tenure elongation.” He added that once tenure ends, authority ends.

Despite fresh elections and the swearing-in of new officials on February 23, 2025, Adeleke alleged that the former office holders remained in place with security backing and warned that reports of attacks on workers trying to resume duty were troubling.
