The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has demanded the immediate release of 52 students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, who were arrested after taking part in a protest against rising kidnapping and insecurity in Edo State.

The arrests followed a peaceful demonstration held last Saturday in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, where residents and students marched through the streets to express fear and anger over repeated abductions in the area.
The detained students, mostly undergraduates of Ambrose Alli University, were reportedly picked up by security operatives during and after the protest and later remanded at the Ubiaja Correctional Centre.

SERAP said the students were exercising their constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and free expression, stressing that protesting against insecurity and poor governance is lawful and protected under Nigerian law and international human rights agreements.
The group urged Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo and other authorities to release the students without conditions, drop all charges linked to the protest, and stop what it described as a growing pattern of using arrests to silence peaceful civic action.
