The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike has warned that a large cash balance left in Rivers State is drawing the attention of political actors from within and outside the state.

He spoke on Saturday evening in Port Harcourt during a meeting with members of the Rivers State House of Assembly at their legislative quarters along Aba Road.
The issue centres on N600 billion said to be in the state treasury after the end of emergency rule imposed on Rivers State. Lawmakers had raised concerns over poor public schools and questioned why part of the funds was not used to fix classrooms and hire teachers.
The matter gained wider attention after Governor Siminalayi Fubara confirmed the amount, explaining that he met N600 billion on returning to office after his suspension was lifted in September.

Wike said the public disclosure of the funds had opened the door for political figures who now praise the state government only to gain access to the money. He said some politicians use public loyalty as a tool to secure personal benefits.
He added that Rivers State has always attracted political interest because of its finances and warned that careless handling of such information fuels opportunism. Wike also praised the state assembly for keeping to the peace deal brokered by President Bola Tinubu during the political crisis.
