FG Warns Terror Groups Using PoS and Social Media

The Federal Government has raised concern over how terrorist groups in Nigeria are using PoS operators and social media platforms to fund and promote criminal activities.

The warning was issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the Director General of the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Major General Adamu Laka, during the centre’s 2025 end of year press briefing.
Laka said terrorists now rely heavily on ransom payments and often use PoS accounts to move money quietly. He explained that kidnappers usually give victims’ families PoS account numbers, making it difficult for security agencies to track the funds.

He added that investigations often trace ransom transfers to PoS operators, who unknowingly become part of the crime chain when the money is later withdrawn by the criminals.
The NCTC boss also revealed that terrorists are using social media to spread messages, recruit supporters, and raise funds. He said security agencies are working with major social media companies to identify and shut down such accounts.
Laka noted that terror groups constantly change their methods, including using fake names and unverified accounts, but assured Nigerians that security agencies are adjusting their strategies to respond to these growing threats.
