Fresh questions have surfaced over the rescue of pupils abducted from St Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Niger State, after an aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed doubts about the process.
The concern was raised by Paul Ibe, Atiku’s media aide, following the release of the last batch of 130 students, which ended weeks of captivity after the November 21 attack in Agwara Local Government Area.

The doubts emerged on Sunday shortly after the federal government announced the rescue, with Ibe suggesting that the manner of the announcement made the incident appear poorly handled and raised suspicion around how events unfolded.
The abduction occurred when armed men riding motorcycles invaded the boarding school at night, went through hostels, and took hundreds of pupils into surrounding forests, triggering nationwide outrage.

In the days after the attack, about 50 students escaped on their own, while security operations later secured the freedom of 100 others in early December before the final group was released.
The freed pupils were taken to Minna and received by Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago, while the school’s proprietor, Bishop Bulus Yohanna of the Kontagora Diocese, confirmed that the governor personally relayed news of the final release, bringing relief to anxious families.
