Wike Cancels Apo Karshi Road Contract And Reassigned Project

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cancelled the contract for the 13-kilometre Apo–Karshi Road after years of slow progress and handed the project to SCC under an emergency arrangement.

The road was first awarded in 2011 to Kakatar Construction Company but has remained unfinished, prompting renewed concern during Wike’s inspection of key road projects in Abuja.

The minister told reporters during the tour that the original contractor failed to deliver, leading to the decision to revoke the agreement. He said SCC has already moved to site and begun work, raising hopes that the long-delayed project may finally be completed.

Wike said the decision was necessary because road projects should not be trapped in political games. He insisted that the Apo–Karshi link is vital for residents and must be delivered without further delay. He also confirmed that the Kubwa–Bwari Road has been awarded and work is underway to open a new route for commuters.

During his stop at the Karu area, the minister addressed concerns from a shop owner whose structure had been marked for demolition. He assured her that compensation would be paid but explained that the building sits on a blocked water channel, which must be cleared to prevent flooding. He said public safety remains the priority even when such decisions are difficult.

Wike also noted that the warm reception from residents during the tour showed that communities appreciate the pace of work across the city. He said the ongoing road projects would be ready for commissioning during President Bola Tinubu’s third-anniversary celebrations.

Looking ahead, the minister added that the FCTA will not award new projects in 2026. Instead, efforts will focus on completing all ongoing jobs, especially as the year will be politically charged and requires visible delivery of government commitments.
