Tinubu Launches Electric Tricycle Plan For Youth

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday launched a new electric tricycle programme in Abuja to support young people, expand job opportunities and push Nigeria toward cleaner transportation.

He was represented at the event by Labour Minister Muhammad Dingyadi.

The programme was introduced to cut transport costs, promote green mobility and create avenues for self-employment. Officials said the plan fits into Nigeria’s ongoing energy transition efforts and long-term goals for a cleaner environment.

The electric tricycles are expected to reduce transport expenses by about 40 per cent, offering an alternative to fuel-powered models. Government officials noted that this shift would help reduce pollution while easing the financial pressure on riders and commuters.

Youth Development Minister Ayodele Olawande said the launch opened a new path for young Nigerians, especially those in the informal sector. He explained that the initiative reflects the president’s belief in the creativity and capacity of young people across the country.

Permanent Secretary of the Youth Development Ministry Maryam Keshinro described the programme as a turning point that brings young people into a future shaped by technology, sustainability and innovation. She said it supports the Renewed Hope Agenda by tackling unemployment and high transportation costs while advancing national climate goals.

NATOMORAS President Usman Gwoza welcomed the rollout, saying it offers hope for riders through cleaner energy and better income opportunities. He called on the government to ensure proper distribution so the programme can reach communities nationwide and grow Nigeria’s green economy.
