Doctors Push For Fair Deal As Nationwide Strike Drags On

The doctors’ strike entered its 15th day on Saturday as resident doctors across the country pressed the Federal Government to settle long-standing issues affecting their pay and working conditions.

The action has slowed services in federal hospitals and left many patients seeking alternatives.

The strike involves doctors in 91 hospitals, including major teaching hospitals and specialist centres. These facilities have been operating with limited staff since the action began earlier in the month, creating delays in wards, clinics, and emergency units.

The doctors are demanding the completion of a delayed Collective Bargaining Agreement that is meant to set clear terms for their work and welfare. They also want the government to update the CONMESS salary structure, which they say no longer reflects current economic realities.

Their demand list has 19 items, ranging from payment of salary arrears to release of the 2025 residency training fund. They are also seeking timely specialist allowances, recognition of postgraduate qualifications, and better workplace conditions that support patient care.

The doctors say morale has dropped as daily living costs rise while key welfare issues remain unresolved. Many report working under pressure in facilities that need better funding and support.

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Ministry of Health to settle the dispute. While talks are ongoing, the union says it is waiting for firm steps that will restore trust and bring the strike to an end.
