The Senate has called on the Federal Government to honour the late Senator Ibrahim Kontagora by naming a federal institution or public monument after him.

Kontagora, who represented Niger North between 2011 and 2015, died on August 7, 2025, in Abuja. He was known for his advocacy for rural development and his strong contributions to debates on agriculture and infrastructure financing during his time in the Senate.

The motion to immortalise him was sponsored by Senator Abubakar Bello (Niger North), who described Kontagora as a dedicated public servant whose legacy continues to inspire many in Niger State and beyond.

Following the motion, the Senate observed a minute of silence in his honour. When the proposal was put to a voice vote, it received overwhelming support from lawmakers.
Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who presided over the session, confirmed the Senate’s resolution and announced that a delegation would be sent to Niger State on a condolence visit.
“The Senate agreed that a monument be named after him and a delegation sent to Niger on condolence visit. May the soul of our dear colleague rest in peace,” Barau said.
With the adoption of the motion, the Senate is expected to formally communicate its resolution to the Federal Government for implementation, in line with parliamentary tradition of honouring distinguished former lawmakers.
