Gunmen kidnap Kebbi Deputy Speaker After Evening Prayers

Gunmen on Friday evening abducted the Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Samaila Bagudu, shortly after he left a mosque in his hometown, Bagudo.

The attackers reportedly stormed the area in large numbers around dusk, firing several shots to scare residents before seizing the lawmaker as he made his way home from prayers. Witnesses said the gunmen quickly fled the scene, leaving the community in panic.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Kebbi State Governor, Ahmed Idris, confirmed the abduction, stating that the government had received initial reports and was awaiting a full security briefing.

“Yes, I just got the information about the alleged abduction of the Deputy Speaker in his hometown this evening. I am in touch with the Director of Security in the state. Once I get the details of what transpired, I will alert you very soon on the government’s position,” Idris said.

He added that the state government was “on top of the situation” and had activated security measures to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted lawmaker.

Security agencies have since been deployed to Bagudo and surrounding areas as search and rescue operations intensify. Residents say the abduction has deepened fears in the community, which has witnessed growing insecurity in recent months.

Across Nigeria, reports of kidnappings and armed attacks have continued to rise, fueling public anxiety over worsening security conditions despite ongoing efforts by security forces to contain the violence.
