The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara State has declared that recent defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not shake its structure or affect its control in the state.

The party made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday in Gusau by its Publicity Secretary, Halliru Andi. The reaction followed the defection of Maharazu Faru, the lawmaker representing Maradun II constituency in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, who left the PDP for the APC alongside party executives from five wards.

Faru cited Governor Dauda Lawal’s alleged failure to fulfil his campaign promises, particularly in tackling insecurity, as his reason for leaving. However, the PDP dismissed the claim, insisting that the party remains strong and united under the leadership of its state chairman, Dr. Jamil Jibo Magayaki.

The statement said the party respected Faru’s decision but was not surprised by it, describing his move as one driven by personal interest rather than the collective good of the people. It noted that the PDP remains focused on delivering on its promises and rebuilding the state through reform-oriented governance.

According to the statement, Governor Lawal’s administration has continued to restore public confidence, strengthen institutions, and implement development programmes aimed at improving the lives of citizens across the state. According to data from the State House of Assembly, the PDP still holds a majority with 14 lawmakers, while the APC now has 10 members following the recent defection.
