The Federal Government has dismissed claims by former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi that it is neglecting ports outside Lagos, saying ongoing modernisation projects cut across all regions of the country.

In a statement on Tuesday, Special Adviser to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Bolaji Akinola, said the $1 billion Apapa and TinCan Island Port modernisation is only part of a wider national strategy.

According to him, the government has already begun the process of upgrading ports in Warri, Calabar, Port Harcourt, and Onne as part of efforts to strengthen maritime infrastructure nationwide.

He added that new deep seaport projects are also underway in Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River states, in partnership with state governments and private investors.
The statement also cited the Onitsha River Port in Anambra State as proof of government efforts to expand port operations beyond Lagos and improve access for inland states.
Dr. Akinola said the Lagos ports’ modernisation is necessary due to their size and traffic volume but stressed it is not the Federal Government’s only focus.
He reaffirmed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains committed to balanced development, food security, and economic diversification through the blue economy agenda.
