The Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State has dismissed claims that former governor Godwin Obaseki is on the run, saying he is currently on a fellowship programme at a university in the United Kingdom.

At a press conference in Benin City on Tuesday, former Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, said Obaseki chose to stay away to give Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration room to operate.

Nehikhare described as false the claims that Obaseki did nothing in eight years, listing several roads and projects credited to his tenure. He also said the current government was benefiting from Obaseki’s legacies, including the Education Hub at Itakpe.

He maintained that Obaseki is a “free man” and has no interest in running for any elective position, unlike some of his predecessors.
The new PDP Publicity Secretary, Dan Osa-Ogbegie, accused the Okpebholo administration of focusing on propaganda rather than governance. He criticised the ongoing flyover projects, saying they lack economic value while inner roads remain neglected.
He urged the APC-led government to stop blaming Obaseki and focus on real governance, especially in education, infrastructure, and civil service reform.
