Reps Move To Make Security Directorate After Bomb Threat To National Assembly

The House of Representatives has raised alarm over threats by terrorists to bomb the National Assembly Complex and is now pushing for a new security framework to protect the country’s top legislative institution.

Chairman of the House Committee on Internal Security, Hon. Garba Ibrahim Muhammad, revealed the threat on Tuesday during a public hearing on a bill to establish the Legislative Security Directorate. The proposed directorate aims to manage security operations and protect lawmakers, staff, and visitors within the National Assembly.

Garba said the complex has been facing multiple security issues, including car theft, vandalism, infiltration by unregistered visitors, and fake identity cards. He warned that without urgent reforms, such lapses could disrupt legislative activities and threaten Nigeria’s democracy.

He explained that the proposed bill would introduce a coordinated security system modeled after global parliamentary standards. While maintaining that the National Assembly must remain open to the public, he said the safety of everyone within the complex must not be compromised.

Garba also urged state assemblies across the country to adopt similar frameworks to strengthen legislative security nationwide.

The public hearing on the bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Provide for the Establishment and Functions of the Legislative Security Directorate in the National Assembly (HB 1632)”, took place at the House of Representatives Conference Hall in Abuja.
