Momodu Says Jonathan, Obi Can’t Defeat Tinubu in 2027

Former PDP chieftain and publisher of Ovation magazine, Dele Momodu, has said that neither former President Goodluck Jonathan nor Labour Party’s Peter Obi can defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Momodu stated this in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday while reacting to the ongoing wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including those of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said the APC now firmly controls both the executive and legislative arms of government, describing Nigeria as having “cruised senselessly into a one-party state.”

According to Momodu, opposition parties can only remain competitive if they form a strong coalition and apply regional and religious balancing in their strategy. He argued that Tinubu has already secured dominance in the South, and the opposition must focus on winning over the North.

He said, “I do not see any Southern candidate giving Tinubu a tough challenge — not Jonathan, not Peter Obi. If they contest as individual candidates, they will fail spectacularly.”

Momodu urged opposition parties to unite and agree on a joint ticket, suggesting that a Northern Muslim presidential candidate paired with a Southern Christian running mate would be the most viable way to challenge Tinubu’s likely Muslim-Muslim ticket.

He said only a united opposition front — similar to the alliance that produced the APC in 2015 — can mount a credible challenge in 2027.

Concluding, Momodu noted that “the game is not over,” but warned that time is running out for the opposition to act decisively and field “candidates of absolute necessity.”
