Tinubu Mourns Uma Ukpai, Calls Him God’s Faithful Servant

President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to renowned evangelist Dr. Uma Ukpai, describing him as a true servant of God and humanity whose life was defined by faith, compassion, and a deep commitment to unity and service.

In a personally signed statement on Monday, Tinubu said the late Ukpai was not only a preacher but also “one of God’s generals” who dedicated his life to spreading the gospel and promoting discipline, love, and peace among people.

Dr. Ukpai, founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association and a pioneer of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), died at the age of 80.

The President recalled the evangelist’s powerful ministry, noting that Ukpai was a key figure in the revival movements that swept through Nigeria and parts of Africa in the 1980s. He mentioned landmark crusades such as the “Greater Ibadan for Christ Crusade” in 1982 and the “Greater Lagos for Christ Crusade” in 1985, which drew massive crowds and transformed lives.

Tinubu said Dr. Ukpai’s work went beyond the pulpit. Through his humanitarian projects, schools, hospitals, and charities, he touched countless lives, especially among the poor and underprivileged. “He built men and bridges, linking faiths, people, and tribes. He fulfilled his divine mission and has gone to be with the Lord,” the President said.

The President extended condolences to Pastor Philomena Uma Ukpai, the family, and members of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association. He urged them to take comfort in the late preacher’s legacy of faith, service, and selflessness, adding that his influence would continue to inspire generations.

“Dr. Ukpai was a vessel God used to touch lives and shape souls. His impact will live on,” Tinubu said, praying that God grants the family and Christian community the strength to bear the loss.

Tributes have continued to pour in from religious and public figures who described the late evangelist as a fearless preacher and a pioneer of faith who remained steadfast in spreading the gospel across the world.

Born in Ohafia, Abia State, Dr. Ukpai began his evangelistic journey at the age of 12 after meeting the late Dr. Akanu Ibiam, former governor of the defunct Eastern Region. Over the next six decades, he ministered across continents, built faith-based institutions including King of Kings Hospital and Uma Ukpai University, and remained a leading voice in Pentecostal revival.

His family confirmed his passing on October 6, 2025, in a statement celebrating his “triumphant homegoing” and describing him as a “spiritual general” whose life reflected God’s power and love. Details of his funeral arrangements will be announced later.
