Obi Declares Insecurity A National Emergency

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has described Nigeria’s rising insecurity as a national emergency, expressing deep concern over the growing wave of violence across the country.

Obi spoke after reports of deadly attacks in parts of Kwara and Kogi states on Sunday, where gunmen killed several residents and displaced others. He condemned the killings as cruel and senseless, calling them a tragic reminder of the government’s failure to protect its citizens.

He referred to the attack in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, where about 27 people were reportedly killed by armed bandits. The former governor described the situation as heartbreaking, lamenting the continued loss of innocent lives.

Reports from Kwara State also revealed that bandits had overrun nine local government areas—Baruten, Edu, Ekiti, Ifelodun, Isin, Kaiama, Oke-Ero, Patigi, and Irepodun—where they now demand food and drinks as ransom. Obi said such developments show how insecurity has spread beyond control.

He warned that violence and kidnappings have become disturbingly normal in many parts of the country, with Nigerians now living in fear both in their homes and on their farmlands. He said the increasing attacks have crippled rural communities, displaced farmers, and worsened hunger across the nation.

Obi stressed that leadership must first guarantee the safety of lives and property, describing it as the most basic responsibility of any government. He urged authorities to treat insecurity with the urgency it deserves and restore confidence among citizens who have lost hope in the system.

He also expressed sympathy for families affected by the attacks and prayed for comfort for the bereaved. Obi reaffirmed his belief that Nigeria can overcome its challenges if leaders show compassion, courage, and a true commitment to protecting the people.
