The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has closed its application portal for the 2024/2025 academic year, ending the second full cycle of the scheme.

The closure took effect on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, and will allow the agency to complete processing of outstanding applications and upkeep payments.

In a statement issued by its Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, the Fund announced that the next round of applications for the 2025/2026 academic session will open in the second week of October 2025 and remain active until January 2026. The timeline gives fresh applicants and continuing students an opportunity to submit their requests ahead of the new session.

NELFUND urged higher institutions to update their students’ records on the Student Verification System without delay. Schools that are yet to begin a new academic session within the application window were asked to contact the Fund for possible concessions.

The Fund also set an October 8 deadline for schools to verify all pending 2024/2025 applications. Any requests left unverified by that date will be cancelled automatically, forcing affected students to submit fresh applications for the 2025/2026 cycle. Students have been encouraged to press their institutions to complete the verification process on time.
The agency disclosed that some students have not received approval or payments for the current session due to their institutions’ failure to carry out mandatory checks. It said discussions are ongoing with defaulting institutions but warned that non-compliance would lead to their names being made public.
On upkeep allowances, NELFUND clarified that payments for 2024/2025 will continue until November 2025. However, students will be required to reapply for the 2025/2026 session to remain eligible for funding.
With the closure of the current cycle, the Fund is shifting focus to preparing a smoother rollout for the upcoming academic year, while stressing accountability and cooperation from schools to ensure students get the financial support they need.
