Doctors under the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Oyo State have threatened to withdraw their services if the state government fails to meet their demands by October 2, 2025.

The association, led by its chairman Dr. Happy Adedapo, issued the warning during a press briefing in Ibadan, saying its members had run out of patience after several unfruitful attempts at dialogue with the government. He warned that a seven-day warning strike would begin immediately after the ultimatum, and an indefinite strike would follow if no action was taken.

Dr. Adedapo appealed to traditional rulers, civil society groups, and opinion leaders to intervene and prevent a total shutdown of health facilities across the state. He explained that doctors had exhausted all peaceful options but were left with no choice as the government continued to ignore their concerns.

The doctors’ grievances include poor welfare, delayed allowances, and lack of proper funding for hospitals. They are demanding the immediate implementation of the new CONMESS salary structure, prompt payment of training funds to resident doctors, disbursement of accoutrement allowances, and competitive wages for clinical lecturers. They also want the 2024 National Minimum Wage implemented for doctors, just as it has been done for other workers in the state.
Beyond welfare, the NMA is pushing for urgent upgrades of hospital infrastructure, replacement of obsolete equipment, and better hospital funding. It also called for the employment of more resident doctors to tackle manpower shortages and the inauguration of a governing board for the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso.
Dr. Adedapo noted that resident doctors at the institution had been on strike since July 29, 2025, with little effort from the government to resolve the crisis. He warned that the health sector in Oyo could face total collapse if urgent steps are not taken.
