Northern Group Tackles Malami Over Insecurity Claims

The North West Democracy Monitoring Group (NDMG) has cautioned former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, against what it described as attempts to exploit insecurity in the region for political gain.

Malami had alleged that his convoy was attacked by suspected political thugs in Kebbi State. But in a statement on Tuesday, NDMG chairman, Abubakar Sani, dismissed the claim as baseless and a reckless attempt to incite unrest.

Sani accused Malami of using the worsening insecurity in the North West, especially in Zamfara and Kebbi, to regain political relevance.

“It is disheartening to witness individuals, including Malami, attempt to prey on the vulnerabilities of our citizens. This behaviour is not only unethical but also undermines efforts to restore peace and stability,” the group said.

The NDMG acknowledged the challenges facing security forces in tackling armed groups but noted that their work was being complicated by politicians who politicise the crisis.

The group also faulted Malami’s record in office, claiming that his only visible project in the region during his time as Attorney General was the construction of a single prison, while projects like the Abuja-Kano Expressway were neglected.

The group urged political actors to stop manipulating insecurity and instead support genuine efforts to restore peace across the troubled region.
