FIRS Mourns Four Senior Staff killed In Lagos Fire

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is mourning the loss of four senior staff members who died in the fire that engulfed Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos, on Tuesday.

The victims were trapped while on duty at the FIRS offices located on the sixth and seventh floors of the high-rise when the blaze broke out. Those who lost their lives were identified as Mrs. Ekelikhostse George, Assistant Director; Mr. David Sunday-Jatto, Assistant Director; Mrs. Nkem Onyemelukwe, Senior Manager; and Mr. Peter Ifaranmaye, Manager.

According to FIRS, its security team quickly alerted the fire service when the incident began, but thick smoke had already filled the building, making rescue difficult. The agency said the entire workforce was in shock over the tragedy and extended condolences to the grieving families. It pledged to provide full support to them during this period of loss.

The tax agency also confirmed it is working with emergency responders and relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the fire. In addition, it announced plans to review safety measures across all its offices nationwide to prevent a repeat of such an incident.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said the fire spread quickly through the tower, leaving many occupants struggling to escape. Rescue efforts continued late into the night as investigators began work to uncover what triggered the deadly blaze.
