Nigeria Moves To Strengthen Defence Pact With Brazil

Nigeria has restated its commitment to fully implement the defence agreement it signed with Brazil on June 24, 2025.

The accord is designed to expand military cooperation, promote technology transfer, and build stronger industrial partnerships between the two nations.

Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar gave the assurance during a bilateral meeting with his Brazilian counterpart, José Múcio Monteiro Filho, in Brasília. The discussion took place on the sidelines of President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Brazil, and it centered on enhancing defence ties, boosting industrial collaboration, and improving maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.

In Abuja, a statement released by the Ministry of Defence explained that Badaru stressed the need for concrete implementation of the deal to help Nigeria grow its domestic defence industry. He noted that local capacity development was crucial to reducing heavy dependence on imported equipment while positioning Nigeria as a hub for defence production in Africa.

The minister also pointed out that stronger cooperation on maritime awareness, joint exercises, and defence interoperability would help both countries safeguard critical sea routes. He added that such efforts could support the growth of their blue economies and improve regional stability.

Badaru praised Brazil’s role in ensuring security in the Gulf of Guinea, describing the corridor as vital to Nigeria’s economy. He also acknowledged Brazil’s contributions to the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone, which aims to promote security and development across the region.

He further linked the defence pact to President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that the administration’s focus on national security and self-reliance aligns with the objectives of the partnership.

Both ministers agreed to establish a structured framework for defence dialogue to ensure accountability and measurable results. The arrangement, they said, would guarantee continuity and lead to tangible outcomes that strengthen the long-term partnership.

Also present at the meeting was General Renato Rodrigues de Aguiar Freire, Chief of the Joint Staff of the Brazilian Armed Forces, who joined in reaffirming the commitment to a forward-looking defence relationship between the two countries.
