Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday flagged off the construction of Lot 1 of a 198-kilometre water pipeline project aimed at providing potable water to residents of Bwari Area Council and nearby communities.

Speaking at the event, Wike said the project was in line with President Bola Tinubu’s promise to expand access to pipe-borne water across Abuja. He explained that the contractors, China Geo-engineering Construction Limited, had already received 50 percent of the contract sum to fast-track the work.

According to him, the project is expected to be completed in less than 18 months, with a target to commission it by Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.

“We are not just focusing on the city centre; development is going to the satellite towns as well. By next year’s budget, we will move to Kuje and Kwali, and by 2027, Gwagwalada and Abaji will also be covered,” Wike said.
He added that the project will create at least 1,600 direct jobs and reduce residents’ reliance on boreholes, as they would be able to connect directly to the central water supply.
Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, Richard Dauda, noted that the pipeline would extend water supply beyond Bwari township to communities including Ushafa, Jigu, Kuduru, and Kuchuku, improving the living conditions of residents.
